P355NH Steel

P355NH steel is a normalised fine grain pressure vessel steel supplied to EN 10028-3. It is commonly specified for boilers, pressure vessels, heat exchangers and other equipment where strength, toughness and performance at elevated temperatures are important.

Key Characteristics of P355NH Steel

P355NH forms part of the EN 10028-3 family of weldable fine grain steels for pressure purposes.

Its key characteristics include:

1. Pressure vessel applications: The grade is designed for equipment that contains gases or liquids under pressure, including boilers, vessels and heat exchangers.
2. Minimum yield strength: The “355” refers to a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa for plate up to 16mm thick. The specified value reduces as plate thickness increases.
3. Normalised condition: The “N” indicates that the steel is supplied in a normalised or normalised rolled condition. This creates a refined grain structure that supports strength and toughness.
4. Elevated temperature properties: The “H” indicates that the grade has specified minimum proof strength values at elevated temperatures. This makes it suitable for pressure equipment that operates above normal ambient temperatures.
5. Good weldability: P355NH can be welded using established welding processes. Plate thickness, heat input, consumables and any preheating requirements should be considered before fabrication.
6. Controlled composition: The levels of carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, sulphur and other elements are controlled to meet the requirements of EN 10028-3.
7. Good toughness: Its fine grain structure supports dependable toughness in demanding pressure related applications. For particularly cold operating environments, a low temperature subgrade such as P355NL1 or P355NL2 may be required.
8. Corrosion protection: This grade is not inherently corrosion resistant. A suitable coating, surface treatment or other protective measure may be needed where the steel will be exposed to moisture, chemicals or corrosive substances.

The correct material should always be selected according to the project specification, operating pressure, temperature, plate thickness and relevant design code.

Certification, Traceability and Testing

If your project requires certification, traceability or additional testing, please confirm this at the enquiry stage.

Depending on the order and specification, P355NH steel can be supplied with EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certification where required. Traceability can also be provided, usually by hard stamping, when this is specified for the project.

Additional material testing can be arranged through our sister company when required. Other specialist inspection, testing or third party witnessed services may be arranged through suitable external partners.
