What is Abrasion Resistant Steel

Abrasion resistant steel, often referred to as wear plate steel, is a durable material designed to withstand extreme wear and abrasion while maintaining its structural integrity. It is widely used in industries where machinery operates in harsh and abrasive conditions.

Key Characteristics:
Composition: Made from low-alloy steel with elements like chromium, nickel and manganese, the steel has an enhanced hardness and toughness after being quenched and tempered.
Exceptional Wear Resistance: Resists damage caused by friction and impact, significantly extending the lifespan of equipment.
Versatility: Can be shaped and cut to suit various applications, including buckets, chutes, crushers and conveyor systems.

By using abrasion resistant steels, like wear plate 400, industries benefit from reduced maintenance, increased productivity and improved safety. Though it may have slightly higher initial costs, the long-term savings and durability make it an indispensable choice for demanding environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these plates rust if they are stored or used outside?

Because these are carbon steel plates, they will develop a layer of surface rust if exposed to rain or damp conditions. While this orange “patina” does not actually reduce the hardness of the steel or its ability to resist wear; most customers prefer to paint or coat the sides that are not being rubbed to keep the plate looking professional.

Is it possible to carry out a patch repair on the wear plate if only a small area is worn?

Yes. In many applications, smaller sections of abrasion resistant plate can be welded over localised high wear areas rather than replacing an entire panel. This approach can help extend the service life of equipment in a cost effective way.

We offer in house cutting to size, allowing smaller plates or strips of 400HB or 500HB to be supplied to suit maintenance requirements. As with any welding on hardened material, appropriate fabrication procedures should be followed to reduce the risk of cracking.

Why does abrasion resistant plate feel heavier or more rigid than mild steel?

The actual weight per square metre is very similar to mild steel of the same thickness, as density does not vary significantly between carbon and low alloy steels. However, abrasion resistant plate has a much higher hardness and strength, which makes it feel more rigid during handling. It will flex less under its own weight compared to mild steel, so appropriate lifting methods and support should always be used.

Can abrasion resistant plate be used as a permanent structural base?

Abrasion resistant plate is primarily designed to resist wear rather than to act as a primary structural member. While it has high strength, it is not typically specified in place of structural grades that are certified for load bearing applications under building standards.

In most cases, structural steel such as S275 or S355 would be used for the load-bearing element, with abrasion resistant plate applied where surface wear protection is required. If your project involves both structural loading and wear exposure, we can help review the specification to ensure the correct combination of materials is selected.
