How Charpy Impact Testing Works

Charpy testing, also known as the Charpy V-notch test, is a standardised method for determining the toughness of materials under sudden impact. 

• The test determines the amount of energy absorbed by a material during fracture.
• The energy absorbed is a measure of notch toughness and tells us the temperature-dependent-ductile-brittle transition.
• The test is carried out between -196°C and room temperature
• Our testing uses two automatic impact machines with a capacity of 450 (J) 
• This means all our testing is accredited to ISO/IEC standards.

What Do the Results Show?

Charpy impact testing offers data into a material’s behaviour under stress. The results help:

• Assess the material’s toughness and resistance to sudden impact.
• Identify potential weaknesses that could lead to structural failure.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
• Provide additional reassurance for applications exposed to extreme weather conditions.
